Art Placing Guidelines: Picking the Art that is Right Fit for Your Space
Adding attractive art to your living spaces is one of the best ways to decorate your home. Let it be a photo print, canvas print, or framed pictures, choosing the right artwork that aligns with the color, style, space, and ambiance of a room will enhance the overall appearance of that space.
When it comes to selecting artwork for wall hangings and room decor, the size, aesthetics, and quality matter. If you have got good artwork, but the size isn’t right, then it may provide an awkward feel.
Determining the proper size and deciding on placement can sometimes seem daunting. Here is an easy guide to get you started:
Evaluating the room space:
Before you create or purchase beautiful canvas paintings or framed prints, you’ll have to evaluate how they will look in your space and what size fits best. A great way to visualize this is simply by outlining different dimensions of the room and noting them down. This helps you decide if a large square print looks better or if a wide panoramic canvas would be the apt choice.
For room spaces, the bigger the art, the better the look. Choosing wall-hanging art that is too much small for the room can be a bad choice. While evaluating the room space, you may also take into account the amount of furniture and other things that you have in a room, so that the size of the art that you prefer won’t feel too much for the visual field.
Examining the wall:
The overall dimensions of the wall and its orientation are important factors of consideration. Narrow walls that are tall in length mostly work best with artworks of similar shapes, created in a vertical orientation. For long and horizontal wall spaces, you may consider landscape-oriented artwork. Big artworks with larger dimensions usually take up two-thirds or three-fourths of the wall.
In the case of artworks hung near sofas and furniture, the bigger ones generally take three-fourths the width of the furniture and are hung a few inches above the top of the object.
Large wall spaces like gallery walls allow the grouping together of multiple artworks. You can either group together wall art in good order or create a stunning combo of art of varying sizes in a visually appealing gallery layout.
General sizing considerations and placing guidelines:
- Artworks that are fixed or hung on walls should take up 60%- 75% of the available wall space (that isn’t covered by other things like stickers or moldings). Multiplying the width and height of your wall by 0.60 and 0.75 will give a basic idea of the range of art sizes.
- Artworks hung over objects like furniture, a bed, or a couch, should be between 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the object
- For obtaining the most aesthetic feel, aim to have the center of the work to be at eye level. The height at which the art is hung can have an effect on creating a striking room decor.
Consider the height and category/ of your ceilings. High and, voluminous ceilings can allow enough space for grand paintings, while low and narrow ones might offer space for shorter wall hangings, mostly in landscape orientations.
